California’s Luxury Whiskey Brand

Wolves Whiskey, a unique collision of luxury lifestyle and craft spirits.  Their first release is aptly titled, First Run. Here’s a look at what makes it so special, inside and out. “I wanted to sip something with my people at my house that was truly different, something you couldn’t find anywhere else,” says Jon Buscemi. “[Karakasevic] brought some special Rye to the table and blended a juice that is balanced and rich. He’s an artist.” What’s outside the glass is almost as stunning. Each bottle is wrapped in Italian sheepskin leather. It is hand cut, embossed, printed with UV light and affixed to the exterior by hand. The sturdy decanter is topped in maple wood cork.  “The idea for design was to not stray too far from what we do, since not all of us were proper whiskey drinkers by nature,” says James Bond. “We had to build it to live in something authentic...

Irish Whisky from the Teeling Distillery

Teeling, the first distillery to open in Dublin’s city centre for more than 125 years. Teeling's is one of several independent distilleries now driving the Irish whisky revival. Unlike big brands such as Jameson, which is owned by French drinks giant Pernod Ricard and sells over 22 million bottles a year, Teeling creates small batches with strong back stories that appeal to drinkers interested in provenance, tradition and the unique taste. The distillery was set up by brothers Jack and Stephen Teeling. They started producing whiskey last May, and built a visitor center in early June. The newly distilled spirit takes anything from three to 30 years to age, so the whiskies now being sold under the brand are blended from stocks that the Teeling family had – which has a history in whisky stretching back to 1782, when Walter Teeling set up a distillery in Dublin having been collecting for...

Remy Martins Louis XIII L’Odyssee d’un Roi

Always pushing the boundaries of exclusivity, luxury and design, cognac house Remy Martin in collaboration with some of the biggest names in artisanal design, has come up with a full luxury set housing its Louis XIII cognac at the heart. The aptly titled L’Odyssee d’un Roi (A King’s Odyssey because, of course) features a bespoke trunk by Hermes, pieces by silversmith Puiforcat, and glasswork by royal crystallerie Saint-Louis. It will be auctioned off in New York at Sotheby’s in September. The proceeds from the auction will benefit the Film Foundation, a non-profit that works to preserve and restore classic films. You might recall that Louis XIII enjoys grand theater, as evidenced by its efforts with the John Malkovich film. The bespoke trunk by Hermes is entirely hand-stitched with fine leathers and bears the same design as a classic steamer trunk (fitting in with the Odyssey theme). Puiforcat has its hand in making the elegant white-gold pipette bearing...

WINE INVESTMENT AND WINE FUTURES

The traditional wine merchant was the jovial soul who looked after his flock with carefully chosen wines, brought onto the investment wine list at a time when it was felt that these wines could be opened by the clients without them suffering from excessive youthful acidity in the White wines and similar acidity and mouth numbing tannins in the Red wines. Fast forward to the 21st century and a lot has changed. The merchant is no longer the keeper of wines which, after an appropriate slumber in the merchant cellars, are presented to a grateful imbiber. In order for the wine merchants to appease accountants, everything that is bought must be whisked out the door as soon as possible for the purpose of cash flow. I generalise, of course, and in the UK we are blessed with a handful of merchants, some with Royal Warrants, who continue the age old principle of dishing...

THE TOP CHOICE FOR ELITE CHINESE WINE INVESTORS

As far as high-end red wine is concerned, China is quickly taking on the position as the largest consumer of fine drops globally, and as the leading export market for French Bordeaux, the country is credited with pushing prices for coveted vintages to record levels. Along with accumulating fine wine to drink at dinner parties and the like, niche wine investments are also growing in status. While wine investment funds and private collections are proving to be an enjoyable hobby and profitable tool, buying vineyards themselves– in particular those sprawling picturesque properties with French chateaux’s attached – is vastly becoming a leading portfolio option for Chinese investors wishing to diversify their fortunes. It is with this trend that the Far East is undoubtedly becoming a mecca for Burgundy, with a steady and hearty acquisition of vineyards in the legendary French winemaking regions surpassing 100 estates and putting the country ahead of Britain...

Best Irish Whiskey 10 Must-Try Bottles for St Patrick’s Day

I’m a fairly devout Scotch whisky girl—but not in March. As St. Patrick’s Day nears, I will admit that my wandering eye turns to a variety of superb Irish whiskeys—particularly the single pot stills. And when it comes to navigating these amber waters, there’s no better guide than Jack McGarry of New York’s Dead Rabbit Grocery and Grog—the award-winning watering hole that also happens to be America’s finest. McGarry, who cofounded the bar, very graciously shared his top ten picks, which is as diversified and comprehensive a list as one can get. (He mentions Irish whiskey in three categories: single pot stills, blends, and single malts.) And if you’re already well versed on the Emerald Isle’s most popular export, consider these two new releases, which have heftier price points but are totally worth the splurge: Green Spot Château Léoville Barton ($100) and Midleton Dair Ghaelach ($300). The former is matured in ex-Oloroso sherry and ex-Bourbon barrels before...

The Purpose of Decanting Wine & Whiskey

DECANTING SERVES TWO MAIN PURPOSES: TO SEPARATE A WINE FROM ANY SEDIMENT THAT MAY HAVE FORMED AND TO AERATE A WINE IN THE HOPE THAT ITS AROMAS AND FLAVORS WILL BE MORE VIBRANT WHEN SERVING. Why do we decant?  It’s not just the act of pouring liquid from one container to another that accounts for the magic of decanting. Rather, when you decant a bottle of wine, two things happen. First, slow and careful decanting of older wine allows wine to separate from its sediment. These sediments if left mixed in, will give a bitter, astringent flavor and ruin a well preserved wine. Second, when you pour wine into a decanter especially a younger wine, the resulting movement forces the wine to mix with oxygen. This enables the wine to develop its taste and come to life at an accelerated pace. How to decant  Decanting a young wine is easy. Just pour the wine into...
